Choosing a Business Name

The right business name should say it all. There are no real rules involved in choosing a business name, but ones that fare best are generally to the point, memorable and state the purpose of the business.

  • A business name is virtually the same as a first-impression to a potential customer, so it is important to choose a name wisely.
  • A good business name sets your business apart from others. There are probably many other businesses that offer a similar product or service, so it is important to make sure customers are able to distinguish between your business and the others. To do so, try choosing a name with interesting and catchy words, a personal name or even a play on words if it suits the personality.
  • A good business name will be easy to read and spell. The idea behind this point is that if a person cannot say a name, they are less likely to recommend it to a friend. Also, if people cannot spell the name, it may also be harder to search for it on the internet or in the yellow pages.
  • A good business name describes your business. Whereas there may a bit of intrigue into a mysterious business name, chances are that more potential customers will bite if they can clearly define your purpose just from the name. Of course, marketing can play a huge factor in reaching customers, but if you are a business lacking a huge budget, then a name that says it all helps!
  • A good business name reflects the style and class of the business and products. The name for a luxury car company, or a law firm, are generally going to exude a much different vibe than that of a fast food restaurant. A good name reflects the business and products in order to attract the best potential customers.

Once a few possible business names have been chosen, it's best to test them out.
